In an otherwise hot, dry state, two of a naked traveler's gay stops should include Houston and Austin. Austin is the state capital, but more importantly it's the state's eye-candy capital. With colleges and universities all around, green areas for studs to play, and hot weather so that clothing is held to the minimum, what more could the naked traveler ask? Houston, different in many ways, is also a delicious place to visit, with naked delights of its own. Texas is so big (for those interested in size) that we'll cover some other places another time. Austin, the smaller of the two, is known by some as Texas' party city. Among other events, two parties naked travelers will find interesting are Splash (sometimes two) and Austin's contribution to circuit parties, Blu. The original Splash is held in May at Hippy Hollow/Lake Travis - a bit of a drive into the northern reaches of the city. It's a clothing optional affair where hundreds, maybe thousands, of gay men choose the no clothes option. Being a college town, there are plenty of naked sights not to be missed. Blu takes place around Labor Day and there is also another Splash at this time, sometimes called Last Splash. Austin has several places of interest to naked travelers. Charlie's (charliesaustin.com) has five floors of pleasure. Five nights of the week there are strippers and dancers. The Manwatch Dancers will grab your eyes and never let go. But when you escape their sexy siren song, you'll be taken with the amateur strip contest every Tuesday and the wet underwear contest every Monday. Charlie's is an old favorite and a very friendly establishment with a great staff. Another crowd pleaser is Oilcan Harry's (oilcanharrys.com), which also has its special nights. For the naked traveler they have strippers on various nights. They also sponsor an amateur strip contest. Seems Austin's guys are always getting in line to take off their clothes. Whatever it is, there is plenty of flesh in Austin worth seeing. And Oilcan Harry's has the cutest staff. If you're into line dancing and two-steppin' - and what cowboy isn't? - the Rainbow Cattle Company is the place to go. Don your boots and dance all night with your favorite ranch hand in that big barn of a place. Staying at the San Jose Hotel (sanjosehotel.com) gives you a way to throw off the Texas heat. They have a lush garden setting and a small but wonderfully refreshing pool. Only half a mile from the lake, it's a great place to relax. If your naked mind wants more fleshy fun, retreat to the Midtowne Spa (midtowne-spa.com). With a hot tub, steam room, sauna, and a room called the Den, which has a sling just for you, at this place you'll find what you're looking for. Houston is a big city, the fourth largest in Texas. It has plenty of gay nightlife and naked fun. The epicenter of gay life extends along Montrose Boulevard north and south and to the east and west along Westheimer Road. If we thought Austin had a thing for amateur strip contests, the mother lode of these events can be found in Houston at EJ's (ejsbar.com). Each Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday there's a strip competition for amateurs. What about Thursday? Well, they reserve that for the Wet Jockey Shorts contest. What else? More naked fun you could not have in Houston - night after night of guys willing to display their bare essentials. EJ's also has free pool games, a large and relaxing patio, food, and sing-alongs. With all this, you may park yourself here for quite a bit of your stay in Houston. On the other hand, you might try some other venues. Like Mary's - small, cozy, with a patio bar and lots of friendly staff and patrons; or the Meteor, where you can enchant some guy with your Karaoke skills. At Keys West (a cleverly named watering hole) you can sing the night away with great pianists who know all the tunes, so you ought to know all the words or at least be able to mouth along with the crowd. You can even get a Tarot reading. The JR's Bar and Grill (jrsbarandgrill.com) offers professional male dancer contests on Sundays and Mondays. On Tuesdays, guess what? Amateur strip contests. And Wednesdays are reserved for the male underwear strip contest. At the Ripcord (theripcord.com) you can exercise your leather love and maybe buy something southwestern at their shop, BlackHawk Leather, inside the bar. Of course Houston also has a Midtowne Spa (midtowne-spa.com), with some of the same delightful features as it's brother in Austin, and there is a Club Houston (the-clubs.com) which is very nicely appointed. Both are filled with what the naked traveler in you is looking for. Naked travel in Texas is not what you might have thought. Austin and Houston are but two examples of the nakedly delightful things the Southwest has in store for you.
