Two kinds of Hunger come into play in Rafael Alencar's new film for Black Scorpion Video — hunger for food and hunger for sex. This 3-disc production is elegant in every respect, from the production values to the packaging to the sex. It particularly warrants kudos for the Grammy Award-worthy soundtrack by Dardo (available separately on disc #3) and for the most sultry, luscious use of black and white photography since Brad Braverman's 1994 film, hush. The camera work in general, both color and b&w, is outstanding, with ambitious angles and vantage points, and even a couple of dolly shots.
Black and white photography is used for some of the city shots (NYC) and for the scene introductions, before the sex begins. The film opens with Alencar showering and dressing for work while his boyfriend, D.O., remains in bed looking delicious. Alencar strokes his cock in the shower and it gets fully hard, creating the anticipation of a sex scene or even a solo, but neither of those happens. He dresses for work — he's a cop — and leaves.
The scene changes to a restaurant, where the rest of the film takes place. Marko Hansome is the maitre d'; Karim is the waiter, Greg David is the bartender. We see Kyle Lewis at the bar as Alexi Chevalier (Kristen Bjorn's Gregoire Chevalier) and Rocky arrive and ask for a table. Karim takes their order, then suddenly we are seeing everything in color. Karim is naked and Alexi and Rocky are on top of their table kissing and undressing each other.
Scene two follows a similar trajectory. D.O. walks into the bar area, sits next to Kyle Lewis and orders a drink from Greg. We see Greg in black and white shaking a cocktail shaker, then in color stroking the hardon he pulls out of his pants. D.O. leans over the bar to suck it, and Kyle leans over to help himself to D.O.'s ass.
In the third scene, we go back to the kitchen where Joe and David Handsome are washing dishes. Jonathan Lowe walks in and asks for the men's room, whereupon the scene changes to color. Joe is now naked under his apron and he and David set about ravishing Lowe. Lowe stays to satisfy more appetites in the next scene, which includes two of the cooks, Arpad Miklos and C.J. Knight.
Most of the cast meets up in the main dining room for the orgy that concludes the story. In case you had forgotten about Alencar — and this cast could make you forget anything except your Hunger — he stops in for a drink at the end of his shift and demands to know what's going on. They respond by literally tearing his clothes off.
If you like the films of Kristen Bjorn and Lucas Kazan, you will want to see Hunger. The men are flawless (and nearly hairless, one of my few reservations); the individual frames are like paintings by Caravaggio. There's one highly suspect cum shot in which an improbable avalanche of jism rockets in from off-camera, and some of the editing is choppy, particularly in the orgy scene, where the continuity becomes confusing. But overall, Hunger is worth saving up an appetite.
Disc #1 has the five-scene main feature; disc #2 has a 21-minute "making of" featurette and trailers; disc #3 is Dardo's soundtrack. Letterboxed.
