Lucas Kazan is one of the few directors for whom the news of a new film is still an event, and The Men I Wanted is that new film. It was shot on location in Tuscany, at an isolated farmhouse with awe-inspiring vistas of the Tuscan landscape and endless amber waves of grain that conjure up strains of "America the Beautiful."
The farmhouse belongs to Samuel Dolce, who, when he's not riding his tractor through the fields or surveying his domain from an upper-story window, rents rooms to handsome male travelers. And because his guests are so handsome, Samuel frequently entertains thoughts of what it would be like if he could have them all.
As the opening credits unfold, we watch Samuel masturbate as he tells us about these men. A second man appears (not in the same place), a young blond named Pietro, who apparently shares some of the same lust that has inspired Samuel to reveals his desires. Then a third man appears, in yet a third space; it's cover model Mark Federico, also with cock in hand. Decide for yourself whether each of them is thinking about others or about someone else as their ablutions come to the inevitable creamy conclusion and the film commences. Of the three, Pietro is a loose end, as he's the only one who plays no further part in the story.
The remaining four scenes are individually titled, with Dolce remaining the implied narrator. Kazan uses black and white to show flashes of sex that may be imagined by the participants, before any "real" sexual contact occurs. Kazan also employs, as I have noted in reviews of his past films, a multi-layered visual narrative. The black and white footage is one of these layers, as is the coda to the waiter scene, in which a few additional seconds of film suggest that what we have just seen may not really have happened, with the camera backtracking to a sort of visual "square one," then offering a different outcome.
The first non-solo sex scene is "The Swimmer," in which Alexy Tyler and Jean Franko eye each other from opposite sides of a pool. It's one of those infinity-edge pools, with Franko lying on the edge of infinity. Rolling brown hills and scattered clusters of trees lie ready to catch him if he falls. Tyler is spread out to the sun like a flesh offering. Their game of cat-and-mouse (approach, retreat) ends when they finally propel themselves into an embrace. They retreat to a nearby grassy knoll for oral sex, to conclusion, then return to the pool to fuck, with Tyler launching himself onto Franko's cock for a furious (but too short) sit-fuck, then a change-over to a shoulder-stand fuck with time out for Franko to eat the ass he's fucking.
Ethan Clarke and Roberto Giorgio are two very playful "Honeymooners," who pass the time with foosball, hand-in-hand walks through the countryside, intimate non-sexual moments and the usual honeymoon activity: fucking. Blow jobs and rim jobs in bed get the action underway, my favorite part being when they curl into a ball, head to crotch, like a big hedgehog, each driving his tongue into the other's ass. The intial release that provides is followed by a second, when they move to a staircase for a standing fuck, with Roberto's ankle hooked high over the landing, to provide ample accommodation for Ethan's cock and the cameraman.
Lucas Andrades is the farm guest who has carnal thoughts about "The Waiter," Glenn Santoro. Instead of leaving a tip after his meal, Andrades leaves a discreetly folded piece of paper with a secret invitation. Santoro reads it, and beckons him into the kitchen. Their shorts come off by the time they reach the doorway, where they pause to release their hardons. Andrades is so overheated with lust, his cock squirts jism in all directions as soon as he pops open his jeans. He attends to Santoro's hardon with his mouth, then they move entirely into the kitchen for a two-position fuck with Santoro topping and Andrades climaxing spontaneously while he's getting fucked.
So far, Samuel has had only his hand for company as he thinks about the lusty travelers who avail themselves of his hospitality. But he finally gets his turn with Mark Federico, "The Hitchhiker." Dolce is driving his tractor home when he picks up Federico on the side of a narrow country road. The black and white footage we see of Federico diving into the pool suggest that maybe they've done this before. They suck and fuck on a bench in front of a brick hearth. In the closing credits, we see Dolce making pizza (from scratch) at this same horno.
Donizetti provides the music for this Kazan outing but one might suspect Omar Khayyam of providing the inspiration. Omar's simple paean to a loaf of bread (or pizza) and a jug of wine elevates wilderness to Paradise with the addition of "thou." Samuel gets it.
