Max Julien, my favorite Brazilian director, is back after a hiatus of more than a year, with a new film, Paraty Affairs. Julien ranks amongst a scant few international directors (Lucas Kazan, Kristen Bjorn) who can combine artistic vision, directing skill, videography, sound, lighting and impeccable casting and produce a work of supreme beauty and carnality.
    Paraty is a 400-year-old coastal settlement, about 125 miles southeast of Rio de Janeiro, famous for its pristine beaches and classic architecture. It's the vacation choice for Lu Haas, who hires tour guide Rocky de Oliveira (Onan's Hard Choice for 2006's Hottest Man on the Planet) to help him make the most of his time. After visiting a few historic sites, Rocky shows Lu the local swimming hole, whose deep waters and high rocks make it a favorite place for boys to play and show off their recklessness.
    Jack Joy and Yago Ribeiro (those thighs!) cross a narrow footbridge to a more secluded place, where the swift-running waters unexpectedly strip away Jack's baggy trunks. Yago retrieves them downstream, but he'd rather get naked, like Jack, than return the baggies. First they're naked, then they're hard, then they're kissing and sucking. Marcostudio regular Edmundo Castro is carefully picking his way over the rocks when he see them, and he waves hello and asks to join them. Castro is a mammoth man and it's a treat to see a man of his size defy expectations by chowing down on their cocks and bottoming for both of them, with two cum shots apiece.
    Scene two is absolutely brilliant, whether by design or by a fortunate accident in the weather. It is night at the resort where Haas is staying, and he's watching Raul Dias playing a solitary game of pool. The stone pool room has huge open windows, and a storm is brewing outside. We hear the thunder rumbling and the wind picking up, rustling the trees. It's a perfect complement and counterpoint to the sexual storm brewing between Dias and Haas.
    Lu reaches for Raul's crotch and Raul responds by roughly yanking Lu's jeans down and kneading his glutes like dough, as if to assert his dominance at the outset. Raul's cock is prodigious, in girth, in length and in the size of its massive head. The subsequent sex reaches its climax almost at the same time as the storm breaks. The air is absolutely electric; I expected my DVD viewer to short-circuit.
    The following morning, Lu shares the breakfast table with two other guests, Rogério Gusto and Frank Lemos. When they set out to explore the harbor from a speedboat, Lu fantasizes about what they might do when they're alone. Both men have well-developed chests and arms, which demand some of their attention, even to the extent of flexing a bicep for the other to stick his cock in the crevice.
    Sidney Sampaio is another familiar Marcostudio model, with the sinewy grace of Donatello's David, whom Sidney resembles in rear view. Sidney's out on another boat with his boyfriend André Stamatis, a slender, handsome young man. They take particular delight in rimming each other, and in diving into the water after each cumshot, then continuing to suck and fuck when they emerge. From the rivulets of sweat you see pouring down from their bodies, it must have been a particularly hot and humid day, so the ocean probably felt as good as the sexual release.
    Lu is not enjoying his vacation so he decides to leave early. As he is packing, Rocky visits him at the guest resort, bringing along his boyfriend, Patrick Pollito, whose spiky blond locks and tan muscled frame make him look like he just stepped off a volleyball court on some California beach.
    Rocky introduces his boyfriend and tells Lu he thought they might have a three-way. Lu says no thanks, but you two go ahead and I'll watch, which he does — for about 10 seconds. Rocky and Patrick both fuck Lu, along with all-around sucking and rimming. If you watch the DVD extras, you'll see that Rocky was also supposed to bottom in this scene, but it didn't work out.
    Paraty Affairs is much lighter in tone and concept than Julien's last, two-part film, 8 Inches. The models are magnificent and, unlike many other Brazilian films, they are willing to reciprocate. They are also mostly unwaxed and carry impressive endowments. Paraty itself makes a visually arresting backdrop to the men and the sex, and although every scene is stunning, the storm sweeping through the pool room is magnificently feral.
    The DVD has photo galleries, cumshots, outtakes, behind the scenes, trailer. Running time is approximately two hours with an hour of extras.
