Sorry, Bel Ami. Paul Valery is not a rebel. Whether his character in Rebel in intended to be purely fictitious or it represents his actual self, it's little more than a cliché. Aping the mannerisms and clothing of "gangstas" and punks from other countries, cultures or races does not a rebel make. Besides that, Valery appears in six of Rebel's eight scenes, and he just does not have the charisma, charm or sexual magnetism to pull it off.
As in many Bel Ami films, the models sometimes interact with the cameraman (who remains unseen), lending a candid feeling to the sex. After some opening footage in which we watch Paul get his hair styled and talk to the camera about his rebellious ways, he goes home to jack off. He's joined in the next scene, on a different set, by sapphire-eyed blond Keith Johansson, whose squealing bottoming turn rescues the scene from Paul's "attitude," which is already becoming tiresome.
Danny Saradon and Ben Keaton drive up to a multi-story ruined building on a motorcycle and chase each other up the stairs, scattering clothing as they go, finally stopping to kiss and fuck, with brunet Danny the top man.
Paul returns with three of his friends — sColin Reeves, Billy Neeson and Niall Phoenix — all atop a large bed, where he plans to orchestrate an orgy. The action is all oral, which Paul later says was not what he envisioned at the outset, and ends with the four of them jerking off side-by-side.
Niall hangs around for the next scene, in which he gets Paul all to himself. My first boyfriend had a nose fetish, and when he saw a nose he liked, he would launch into an elaborate verbal fantasy scenario of what he'd like to do with that nose. He would have loved Niall, whose nose is the defining feature of his face, worthy of a profile on a coin. Niall's nose serves no purpose in his scene with Paul, except to permit him to breathe as Paul fucks him.
The final three scenes, which are thematically interconnected, introduce Paul's boyfriend, Hans Klee. They are vacationing in Greece. After fucking Hans, Paul goes shopping. Troy Allen, his blond ringlets in less wild disarray than usual, comes over to sunbathe and Hans, still horny, wants to get fucked again. Troy obliges.
Paul gets home in time to see Hans and Troy awash in jism. He sulks at being left out, but when Hans trots off to shower, the prospect of fucking Troy restores Paul's good humor. Their tryst ends the film.
I liked the envelope-pushing displayed by director Marty Stevens in Red Hot Chili Sex, and even more in Mating Season, but Rebel seemed to misfire. Apart from its inaccurate title and theme, it relies almost entirely on the work of model Paul Valery, who is too much of a rubber-stamp teenager to be convincing as a rebel and too much of a sexual Johnny One-Note to be convincing as a carnal force to be reckoned with.
The DVD has fetish menus, cum shots, trailers. Widescreen.
